My brother is a new T12/L1 incomplete. We are based in Virginia and looking for a place to rehab. Has anyone had experience with the National Rehab Hospital in DC? Or should we move him to Shepherd? We are interested in good nursing care and a place who will help him regain function.

No experience with National Rehab in DC but I did rehab at Shepherd. It is the only place I have ever rehabbed. My experience is that Shepherd is an awesome rehab facility. They worked theirs butts off to get me as much back as they could. Ends up it hasn't been much but they taught me what I needed to know to live with this injury indepently. I live by myself and run the same photo studio I did before my injury. The healed my body, mind, and spiirt. Best of luck to ya'll.
By the way... I am a L1 complete. You are lucky to have found this site so early on. There is a bunch of information available to you here. If you have questions... ask them. Nothing is too wierd, silly, or small.

I agree. Based on reputation and experience in the past, I would lean toward Shepherd Center vs. NRH if you have the choice. Univ. of VA is also an option, but again, if you can go to Shepherd Center, do it.
By the way, your brother HAS a new T12/L1 injury. He is not a T12/L1 injury. A fine line, but important.

Look into Woodrow Wilson rehab Center...its where I went to. Also check into the Va DRS (Dept. of Rehabilative Services) program for help. There are a couple of support groups in the state, they may be of some help. Any further questions feel free to PM me....good luck!

Thanks for the point on how to describe my brother's injury. We are all very new to this and learning a lot every day. Everyone's input has been helpful!

Thanks KLD for shaking me up. I've gotten a bit sloppy with my language.
I should have said By the way... I have a complete L1 injury..... Even us that have been dealing with this SCI stuff for a while make mistakes...
