Common problem but with a twist...have had chronic constipation over many years though I eat my veg's, fruit and drink pear juice that seems to assist, I take natural laxative medicine when I feel I am in trouble, essential if I eat any steak, chops etc. I can seldom eat this type of heavy meat, I seem to have to live on chicken mostly...my GP has diagnosed me as having a prolapse virgina and am to see a Gyno in May...my question for u guys is this...when I have a 'blockage' (this could be when I am unable to use my bowels for 4 to 14 days) I get pain across my butt, down my thighs all the way to my ankles, this pain does not allow you to sit, stand or lay down, sleeping is impossible...could this be that the 'blockage' is pressing on a nerve, hence causing this chronic unbearable pain almost down to my feet, effecting both legs? My GP doesn't even acknowledge my explanation let alone give me a possible cause...hoping someone here has heard of this type of pain...Thanks Kay8 :)

Kay, I was hoping someone with better info would kick with an answer to your question. I don't know whether or not a nerve could get pinched the way you're describing. I guess the best you can do for now, since you have identified a problem, is to just continue to cope and avoid the issue as best you can until you find a better answer. I wish you the best of luck.

Thankyou David for your response...I believe it might require a person with medical (nerve) knowledge to have a confirming or explanatory suggestion to my issue...I will just keep on keeping on as always...Thanks again, Kay

kay do you have a injury in that area?
when my vault/rectum in overfilled i notice much more pain in my toes,i have a lot of injury to my nerve roots l4 to s1, i think when the vault is full it presses on these nerves more. it definitively closes off my bladder, i will retain everything.
i i also know when the rectum if full and i having higher pain , when i lean forward on the toilet, as i always tend to do , the pain in my toes skyrockets.
i saw someplace that they were calling the rectum area when the poop is stored the vault. i kind of lie that term, make me feel wealthy, my vault is full.
have to use that om my match.com profile;)

Hi Mike...I do have an injury, not that I would consider it to cause this problem, it is hip cartilidge damage, I split it in a fall and have had arthroscopy twice to remove the damaged cartiledge, it does give me pain down my left leg to my shin if I drive in peak hour traffic, on and off the clutch, but that is more of a heavy ache, not anything the same as the pains down my legs which is all on the back of my both thighs and legs, not the front, thanks anyway for your info.

I was always a person that did not go everyday. Post inrjury I find my old schedule of every 3rd day doesn't work well. The pain increase as time progresses. I have to think of my diet. Fresh apples every day. senekot and if it is longer I will resort to a big glass of gatoraid. The mix of salts and nutrients helps to get started. I hope things work out for you.

I am chronically blocked up from all the pain meds. I take and this does make my pain worse. Especially when sitting on the toitey. Ouch. Isn't it wonderful what we have to deal with?

My question to you is..what are you using to manage the chronic constipation? I ended up going to a GI doc. for advice and he prescribed me Glycolax. This is a powder that you mix with water and drink twice a day. It actually came out in a non-prescription form about a year after I started taking it...it's called Miralax. You can get it in any US drug-store. Have you tried this? It's pretty much tasteless (and I am very picky about that stuff. can't stand most of those fiber drinks. blech).

For worse times, when I am taking more pain meds (like post surgery), I add colace (mineral oil) and senna tablets to the regimen. Also, I'm trying to eat more fruits..veggies and bran. And water too!!!

Best,
Danimal

Hi...this is a reply to Huskerboy and Danimal...thanks for your tips...I don't take any pain meds I'm just this way naturally...lucky me...I too am drinking more water and eating extra fruit and veg and hardly ever eat meat these days...when I get a chronic blockage, that is havn't been for a week or more I have a natural med called Blooms 'Herb-a-lax' from the health food store, you make it up like tea and can have it in juice or any drink for that matter, dosage depends on the assistance required...if you have a full dose don't plan on leaving the house in the AM...available in tablet form too but I don't find this works so well, but taking 2-3 every other night keeps you on the move.
Thanks again for your tips...

Woo hoo I am no longer constipated, I have totally changed my diet, RED MEAT very rarely (unfortunately as I do like it) am now eating mostly chicken, Pork darl made with red lentils, porridge with sultanas, apple cinnamen and honey...well I now GO 2-4 times every morning ??? ALSO I have eventually been diagnosed: intussusception or telescopic bowel which means the lower section of my bowel is like a telescope closing and the internal smaller section having difficulty in dispersing the poop...this is operable, not nice but necessary, probably later this year...I had to have a Defaecating Proctogram exray which must be quite uncommon as the first 2 hospitals I contacted didn't even know what it was.
Thought maybe this might be something others with same or similar suffering as I had might need to persue with their GP/specialist.
There is quite a lot of information on the net if you follow this up.
Al the best, Kay

Kay, I have the very same situation. If I am constipated at all... I get a very stiff terrible pain.. that is truly Agony! Until I take laxatives and get out whatever is in my system, I am in hell. Something is pushing or activating Nerves or something like that. All I know is, If I eat.. I must take Laxitives... otherwise, I'm in hell. Let me know what you think, Thanks, Mike From Florida.

Hi Mike, are you responding to my
1st post of "Chronic pain of a difference' or my
2nd post of "I have eventually been diagnosed" ??
I can give you additional information on either but don't want to confuse anyone.
If it's the 1st one you might need to do what I have eventually had to do, sadly cut out RED MEAT except for a treat maybe once a month.
Let me know and I will give you more info.
Regards Kay

I take alot of pain medications and also take Alli so I've avoided the dreaded constipation. It isn't cheap but it beats the alternative...and it is supposed to help with weight loss...which it hasn't me but I still take it.

for the last coupe of months i have been dealing with this problem.
i started neorotin agaqin. and i know it makes it worse, but. there has to be a way to get it out. my diet is pretty good but the pain mwds are over powering on the constopation.
i should have made a docors appt a month ago, but it is like once i get enough poop out i am tryi ng to get out and catch up on chores.
plus everyday i think i have it fixed and than the mext day i realize i am still messed up.
mayne i havw what you are describing.
i have been to anumber of bowel doctors , you think they would have caughrt it, but the never sent me for a xray period.
it feels like there is a blioclahe inside me, in the lower rectum, i cant reach it to manually evacuate it. i have givenmyself way too many enemas the last month, plus used the Home PIE again alst night. i have also used a tube to implant enemeez higher up, as the tube of enemeez is not long enough, and inserti ng it into dry pooh is a waste.

but i deems i still get these hard balls or lima beab shaped stool out under high presure. as if there is a blockage. i havent felt evacayed in years, and i am really tied and going nuts about this constant urge and pressure , that feels like i have to pooh, and it is not inmy mind, cause pooh still comes out.
i did tyhe pie last night seated, used two bags of water , each bag must me 60 oz, i had to pooh 2 or 3 times today and have pressure right now.
i was thinlin g i took miralax yesterday and senna yesterday so maybe the train is before schedule, but i shouldnt have this press ure,
wwhen muy lower rectum is jammed full my uretha is closed by the pressure and it also causes huge increase in my pain im my foot.

I have long maintained that my butt is connected directly to my feet. Sometimes that foot pain can knock the wind out of you! Also, if I get startled, the foot electrocution is horrible...and I believe there is a rectal reaction to being startled, as well. (See: I was so scared I nearly crapped myself.)

Mike, having suffered for about 20+ years, it was always worse after eating steak and or lamb. I saw the bowel specialist this week and he advised that he doesn't believe the operation for telescoping bowel to be successful, he advised that the way I am managing it, ie: no red meat and diet changed is what is best...I also drink a glass or 2 of HOT water first thing each morning. I miss having a red meat dish, but am content as being able to go every morning (with no laxatives) is a blessing after years of pain. Read some older posts to see what other foods I am having, I need to eat food with iron or may need a supliment down the track...Give it a go...good luck, Kay
