Hi all,

I was wondering if anybody has had any experience with high triglycerides as a cause of peripheral neuropathy (PN)?

I have been suffering with worsening painful PN in my feet for over 5 years. I have been treating the pain with Neurontin (3600 mg /day) and Nortryptoline (30 mg/day) for the last year and it has brought some relief. I have undergone practically every test my neurologist could think of but with no diagnosis.

I recently went for a physical and everything was normal. My GP said I am healthy (good diet and I exercise), however, my triglycerides were very high (350). The GP checked in with my neurologist who said there have been cases where triglycerides cause PN.

I did a Google search and found a post dated May 12, 1997 regarding triglycerides as a possible cause of PN (http://www.medhelp.org/forums/neuro/archive/451.html).

I have experienced the almost exact set of circumstances described in the post; PN in my feet and high triglycerides and everything else is normal. I have just started treatment for the triglycerides at 500 mg Niaspan per day and I am guardedly hopeful that this may help the PN in my feet.

I was wondering if anybody else has had experience with this?

thanks in advance,
Daktron

Was your fasting blood sugar level normal? High triglycerides often accompany diabetes. When my husband was diagnosed with diabetes, he had extremely high triglycerides(900)
and he does have neuropathy caused by years of untreated high blood sugar. I think that even pre-diabetes causes nerve damage.

According to the American Heart Association, triglyceride level will fall into one of these categories:

Normal: less than 150 mg/dL
Borderline-High: 150–199 mg/dL
High: 200–499 mg/dL
Very High: 500 mg/dL

My first test after a light breakfast was 550. I went back the next week and fasted over night and my level was 350. I am negative for diabetes.

That's one I haven't come across before.
