Vonage + VonageTalk (http://alpha.vonage.com/vtalk).
Gizmo5 (http://gizmo5.com/pc/) + GrandCentral (http://www.grandcentral.com/).
Both options work. :)

Grand Central looks interesting but they aren't taking new customers...

Skype works extremely well for me as is an affordable solution. $35 a year.
Check out Magic Jack also. http://www.magicjack.com/7/index.asp

Skype is nice, I don't even have a headset on my laptop.

If you want to keep your current phone carrier, just get supervoice. google it
You will need a modem that supports voice, they also sell a modem that is reasonable and works with their software.
I also use Skype. I pay $30 a year and I can call any phone in the U.S. or Canada from my computer. To receive calls, I think you need Skypein (http://www.skype.com/allfeatures/onlinenumber/).

how about using skypes?

Google purchased Grand Central for about 30 million dollars and then they never really did anything with it. I recently heard that Google will be accepting invitations for Google Voice (http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2009/03/here-comes-google-voice.html) in a few weeks. If it takes longer, don't kill the messenger. Those who already have Grand Central do not need an invitation.

Me Skype, too. I saw a piece in the Wall Street Journal yesterday saying Skype is launching a new service for commercial customers. I did not know until I read the story that EBay owns Skype/
