So what is everyone watching? Old or new, in the theater or at home, and how was it?
Waiting for Guffman for me. One of my favorite comedys of all time! A mockumentary about the musical theater production put on in the small town of Blaine Missouri for it's 150th anniversay celebration. From the same group that did This is Spinal Tap, Best in Show and A Might Wind. This is one of those hilarious movies that my friends and I will randomly quote out of the blue. If you haven't seen it, I'm guessing a lot haven't, check it out. If you don't "I'm going home and I'm gonna...Gonna bite my pillow, is what I'm gonna do!"

I watched Recount (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1000771/) w/ Kevin Spacey. You'll enjoy even if you
aren't political. The actors, mostly Spacey, did an excellent job..
Yesterday I watched The House Bunny (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0852713/) with Anna Faris. The
only reason I halfway enjoyed this was bc of all the cute girls,
mostly Faris, running around in her skimpy outfits. Don't go too far
out of your way for this one.
Just got done watching Untamed Heart on cable about an hour ago. Marissa Tomei and Chris Slater. I have to say, it watered my eyes at times. But I'm sappy like that ;)

"Step Brothers" with Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly. It was funny at times, but
most of it was too obvious or sarcastic. It was a lot like "Walk Hard" in terms
of humor.

Last movie I saw was Max Manus, a Norwegian movie
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1029235/
Most of the film is shot here in Oslo, so it was a "must see" movie. It was very nice. Like they say on imdb: The true story about one of the most brilliant saboteurs during World War II and his battle to overcome his inner demons.

I recently saw a great Indie film, but it is in limited distribution. Title is 'Where God Left His Shoes,' and is the story of a down and out Hispanic family. Very touching movie as the family strives against odds that are stacked against them.
The other movie I saw lately was 'The Assassination of Jesse James' with Brad Pitt. I was surprised at how much I liked it because westerns are not my thing, but it is so much more than just a standard western. This deals with family issues, betrayal, atonement, and loss.

gran torino was pretty good, for a Clint Eastwood movie- I normally sleep through his films. In the past week I saw Eagle Eye and Role Models on bootleg and they were allright. Eagle Eye was just about what I expected, and Paul Rudd was the best part of RM, as he's just about the best part of every movie he's in.

Last movies seen:
Let Sleeping Dogs - Hmmmm ... conflicted for reasons obvious within the first five minutes; a flick all about conflict, both internal and external as well as truth and just where the line is and isn't for telling the absolute truth to those to whom we are closest;
Blame It on Fidel - French language movie w/English subtitles; absolutely, totally worth viewing;
Good Morning Heartache - Italian language movie w/English subtitles; totally worth viewing;
Hard Candy - Bring your brass balls; movie about a child sexual pedator and not what you'd expect; worth it.
I've seen a few others recently, but think I've written enough.
The End.

Seven Pounds ... Will Smith. Definitely worth seeing.
Gran Torino ... I normally hate Clint Eastwood for his past history with people in wheelchairs ... but I did enjoy this movie. Except for the end when he sang a song during the closing credits. He should stick to directing and acting ... brutal.
Blindness ... Mark Ruffalo/Julianne Moore ... nothing spectacular. Save it for dvd rental.

Speaking of the film Mamma Mia!, Meryl Streep sings well for being known as only an actress. She was considered for the part of Eva Perón for the film version of Evita, but by the time production became a reality, it ultimately went to Madonna.
I actually think Madonna looked a lot more like her and had one of her few shining moments being considered a viable actress, but she really isn't one at all.

I had read about it when it first came out and had it on my list of things to see because it got really good write-ups in Magazines and things I had seen.
Its about a famous trial in the late 50s- a man gets spurned by his gf and hires someone to disfigure her by throwing acid in her face, after he serves his sentence, they end up marrying (for 28 years or something?)

This afternoon I watched this older documentary, Koyaanisqatsi: Life Out of Balance. I wasn't sure what to expect based on the description on the dvd cover. It was fascinating. Well worth a watch.
The film consists primarily of slow motion (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slow_motion)and time-lapse (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Time-lapse) photography of cities and many natural landscapes across the United States (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States). The visual tone poem (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Symphonic_poem) contains neither dialogue nor a vocalized narration: its tone is set by the juxtaposition of images and music. In the Hopi language (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hopi_language), the word Koyaanisqatsi means 'crazy life, life in turmoil, life out of balance, life disintegrating, a state of life that calls for another way of living', and the film implies that modern humanity is living in such a way.

I wasn't really shocked by the film, because I was already aware of the poverty and the exploitation of children. I don't want to spoil the movie for others, so I will stop here.

I went ahead and broke down and got Netflix. If I stick with it I'll have to get the player to put it on my TV but today I watched a movie about Ted Bundy, another about John Wayne Gacy, another called The Asylum (a thriller horror movie about an old Asylum turned into a college dorm) and the comedy The Animal. I have wasted my day away watching movies.

One of the worst acted, written movies of all time IMHO was on last night late so of course I watched it. Starship Troopers. Just terrible acting and dialogue, so bad. TWO THUMBS WAY UP! LOL Somehow it just works. I will have to admit it's a guilty pleasure. Anyone else love any movies they know they shouldn't but can't help it.
Oh man... can of worms!
You should have exactly zero guilt for loving this movie! It was loosely based on a fantastic book with the same name by Robert Heinlein. And I mean loose. There are strong feelings involved, I am in the camp of the people who like the movie. I guess I wasn't a hardcore Heinlein fan, but the deviations didn't bother me. And there were a few things the movie makers did right. The book was all about militarism, and do you notice how much in the movie the civilians adore the military? They worship them. And did you also notice that the world was united under a Fascist government where the individual has to earn the right to be a citizen in order to get permits for such things as having babies. They have public executions and corporal punishment. While the characters are in high school they talk about the failures of Democracy.
What else... oh yeah, they go out to eradicate a species not of equal, space-faring, technologically advanced humanoids, but giant insects. Of course man-to-bug the humans get slaughtered, but could insects actually launch asteroids across the galaxy and successfully target the planet Earth? The whole war against bugs was on a false premise. They leave us to wonder what the real motives were for exterminating the indigenous creatures. Mineral resources? Expansion of human-inhabited territory? Could be anything.
There's a lot more going on in that movie than the critics saw.
I could keep going but Battlestar Galactica just started!
nope, couldn't leave it alone... All I'm saying is the humans would never have enthusiasticaly fought the bugs with friggin machine guns if they government didn't have a convenient 'attack' to blame on this enemy. They could have nuked the planet to get rid of the bug 'threat,' but they send lightly armored troops with kinetic energy weapons.
It's a goooooood movie.
And Pitch Black is awesome too.

I do have guilt over loving Starship Troopers, can't help that. Just one quote will show why. Dizzy is about to die and her final word...It's okay Johnny, beause I got to have you. Terrible LOL Loved it. I do also love their version of football looked like fun.

Saw a few movies this weekend. The Aviator, hadn't seen that since the theater and I think I enjoyed it even more this time round. Gangs of New York. What can I say but I bow down to Daniel Day Lewis, he is the best no question in my mind. Rudy on TV but it had bits cut out I think, and a shed a tear again. Meet the Parents, hilarious as ever and Eagle Eye. Entertaining but way over the top and unreal.

Went to see "Taken" this weekend. I am a Liam Neeson fan. Very violent, lots of killing with bodies everywhere, but amazingly he makes a great action hero. Wonder how much of his own stunts he did in this?? It was a gripping story if you can get past all the violence.

Saw "The Class" this week (French Academy Award nomination for Best Foreign Film). It looks like a documentary (and was sort of marketed that way) but is actually not and is based on a best-selling book. Still has a very cinema verite look. Follows an entire year in a French (literature and composition) class in a public school class (13-14 year olds) with a very ethnically diverse group of students. Well acted, for the most part well cast. I suspect there is not much about this story that is uniquely French, and that many of the themes are universal in today's world.
Reinforces for me why I would NOT want to be a school teacher in schools today!!

I just finished watching the Hannibal Lecter series (Silence of the Lambs, Hannibal, Red Dragon, Hannibal Rising). I never quite grasp the concept of making two good movies then making a prequel then making another prequel to the first one. In my opinion the first three movies were pretty good but Hannibal Rising just didn't have the same essence/suspense as the first three nor did it give any insight on how he became a great psychologist. Just really didn't fit in with the other three.

Highly recommend Rachel Getting Married now on DVD. Ann Hathaway is a narcissistic, train wreck of a drug addict and former child model on leave from drug rehab to attend her sister's wedding. The family puts the D in dysfunctional but is very interesting. The wedding and the celebrations leading up to it are probably way more interesting than any wedding you have attended. You can't look away - you don't know if you are witnessing happy ending material or the Titanic going down.

"Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day" I'm a fan of Frances McDormand and Lee Pace is a local boy.
The movie's been in development since the rights were purchased in 1939 by Universal. Set in just barely pre war London, what seems like a bit of fluff ends up having a bitter edge by continually reminding us that this is a doomed society. Most forboding is the image of the RAF moving their bombers north away from the coast while the characters all look on from thier swank penthouse party. You KNOW that in the space of a year or so those buildings will be rubble and half those "bright young things" will be dead or wounded, even if they don't.
Add to that sly humor, Ms McDormands command of pacing, expressions and pacing and you have a gem.
5 stars

I had "W." in my Netflix queue, but was not looking forward to watching it because I thought they were just going to make a buffoon out of Bush. After viewing the movie, it seemed to me that this was a fairly accurate docudrama.

I also enjoyed "Taken" and "Gran Torino",that was by far the best movie I've seen in a long time!
Cidade de Deus, Fast and Furious
"Fast and Furious" deserves credit for doing the key things well. If your expecting much from anything other than the cars then it's a disappointment, but thanks to Justin Lin this has all the makings of a really thrilling action movie, making this fourth flick in the series a little bit better than its predecessors and a lot of fun.
Cidade de Deus: Style of the film gives a nod to Tarantino, with some clever time-jumping, freeze-framing, and texts indicating another chapter of the film. In every sense, a bit of a Brazillian "Pulp Fiction" or "Goodfellas", but with its own unique flavour to it.

Saw this last week with the Cinema Society. Placed in the early 1950s it is the story of an Inak man from Baffin Island who is diagnosed with TB and taken from his family to a TB sanitorium in Quebec City for two years of treatment. He speaks no French, no one else speaks Inak. His loneliness and culture shock is only lightened when he is befriended by his roommate, a nurse, and an orphaned Inak boy also being treated for TB.
An amazing performance by Natar Ungalaaq, who you may remember from "The Fast Runner" (if you did not see that film, get it on DVD and watch it). He has the most expressive face! You barely need the subtitles when he is on-screen as you can read every thought this character has from his facial expressions. One of the best films I have seen in some time.

KLD, I had not heard about the Necessities of Life. Thanks for posting about it. I would like to see it.
Funny you would mention Atanarjuat: The Fast Runner. I was just thinking not that long ago that I wanted to rent it and watch it again. I saw it when it came out in the theatre around 8 years or so ago. You might like this if you haven't seen it already, made by the same production company and director that did Fast Runner:

If you haven't seen it you may want to watch Map of the Human Heart (1993) as it sounds similarly themed to Necessities of Life (which I will try to get from Netflix). Map of the Human Heart starts out with the story of a young inuit boy and Canadian girl who meet in a TB ward for Inuit children being schooled away from family/community. Though subteens, they fall in love, get separated and the story follows them through young adulthood, WWII adventures, etc. Almost a fantasy but very moving. I did see and loved Fast Runner.

I concur. I think me seeing mIckey Rourke back in action is what did it for me. I also saw Slum Dog Millionaires. I thought that was a good movie also. I really gained alot of confidence in my own filmmaking abilities. After watching it, I'm planning on shooting a short film in the next few months, then a feature film within the next year. I will post a link to allow my friends here on Carecure to view it.
Cool! I want to see the final product when you're done.

Last night I watched Wonder Boys starring a very good cast of Michael Douglas, Tobey Maguire, Robey Downey Jr., and Katy Holmes. It's based on the novel with the same title written by Michael Chabon.
It didn't do well in the theater but I think its a great comedy...
professor Grady Tripp, a novelist who teaches creative writing at a university, has been unable to finish his second novel, his young wife has left him, and he is sleeping with his boss’s wife, who is also the Chancellor of the university. Grady's editor is in town to take a look at the book and becomes interested in a book that a student from Grady's creative writing class has just completed.

Saw "Stone of Destiny" (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1037156/) last night with the Cinema Society.
Charles Martin Smith (writer and director) was there and spoke about making the film, which is based on a book by the lead character, Ian Hamilton. It is the true story of an incident in 1950 where some college student Scottish nationalist managed to "rescue" the Scottish Stone of Destiny from the coronation throne in Westminister Abbey in London and return it to Scotland. Beautiful photography and scenery, a few actors that you will recognize (Robert Carlyle, Billy Boyd), fairly well written. Strong Scots accents so you have to listen with the right ear (esp. if you are from the USA).
It was released in the UK last winter, does not yet have an American distribution deal. Suspect it would play theaters like Landmark rather than the big commercial chains.
I would recommend it.

We went to the theatre last night on impulse, having no clue what was playing. By default because it was starting 10 minutes after we arrived and having no interest in the other option (17 Again), we saw Earth, a Disney nature documentary that I had never heard of before.
It was pretty good, worth going to see if you are into this kind of thing. Some absolutely stunning camera work but typical canned Disney narrative intruded (a polar bear starves to death on camera and the narrator--James Earl Jones--waxes on poetically about his spirit of courage living on in the twin cubs he sired the year before). Also a very graphic, slow motion scene where a great white shark in one bite consumes an entire seal that had just leapt across the screen had me thinking "this will give me nightmares." Possibly not a good choice of movie for very small kids. Or people like me who don't really enjoy watching animals rip each other apart, cricle of life or not. But that aside, not a bad way to spend an evening.
OJ, unfortunately they do not have The Journals of Knud Rasmussen. I will keep it in mind though and hope they get it.

That's kind of disappointing you can't get a copy. I hope eventually they have it. It's worth the watch. But I guess it is pretty obscure of a title so it doesn't surprise me its not easily available. I saw it at a film festival but doubt it would even easily be available here in Canada. I have always been fascinated by the circumpolar part of the world as well. I am not sure why but I find it very interesting to read about it.

I went to see Two Lovers last night. Not the type of movie I would normally go see as romance/chick flicks tend to bore me. But my friend got a bunch of free passes from her work and invited me so I went. To my surprise I didn't totally hate it. It was ok. And "ok" is high praise coming from me when it comes to this kind of movie.
Even better than the movie however was the two kiwi raspberry frozen margaritas I polished off in the bar next door to the theatre afterwards :o

If you get a chance to go see Departures, the Japanese film that won the best Foreign Film Oscar this year, GO! This was a wonderful film, although long (nearly 2.5 hours). Wonderful performances, great casting, beautiful cinematography. Of course it is subtitled. Lots of Japanese speakers attended the showing I saw on Saturday (Landmark Theater). It is open now, but probably only at art houses.
It is the story of an unemployed cellist who takes a job with a "encoffiner" in a small Japanese town (his hometown) after being laid off in Tokyo. The beautiful ceremony he performs for the dead is in sharp contrast with the way his job causes him to be seen as unclean by most people, including his wife. It is a beautiful story that will make you think as well.

OK, have been very busy at work (working the holidays and weekends too) but have managed to see three new films in the last couple of weeks.
Moon staring an amazing Sam Rockwell. This is a thinking person's sci-fi movie (no shooting, explosions or monsters). Rockwell plays the sole technician staffing a moon mineral mining operation, on a 3 year assignment. His only companion is Gerty, the computer (very HAL-like) which is voiced by Kevin Spacey. He starts having some health problems, and seeing hallucinations as he nears his 3 year mark. I don't want to say much more or this will become a spoiler, but the last 1/3 of the film is somewhat of an homage to 2001: A Space Odyssey. Playing only in limited release, unfortunately.
My Sister's Keeper. I was prepared to be disappointed in this moving after having read the book (by Jodi Picolt) but it was very well done. I am not a big Cameron Diaz fan, but she was very good, and the children were all well cast and effective actors, esp. Abigail Breslin ("Little Miss Sunshine"). Take your hanky for this one!!!
Away We Go directed by Sam Mendes. A couple who is expecting their first baby travel around the USA in order to find a perfect place to start their family. Along the way, they meet a lot of dysfunctional families and make connections with an odd assortment of relatives and old friends. Maya Rudolph from SNL was very good in a very different role and John Krasinski was excellent as the nerdy but loving husband.
I wanted to see Up! this weekend but all the 3-D locations near me have converted to only the 2-D version so they can start showing the latest "Ice Age" cartoon in 3-D instead. Bummer!

Dazed and Confused
I don't know how I missed this movie up 'til now. I think it was made in the early 90s. But the writer seems to have taken my memories of the year 1976 verbatim and made a movie out of them. Soundtrack and all.
The Secret Life of Bees
Good movie, least I liked it. Dakota Fanning will be a multi-oscar winner by the time she's 30. Maybe I'm biased because she reminds me of my sister, but she's got tons of talent - and is very genuine. well grounded and down to earth in real life.

The Cinema Society season opened with a screening of Amreeka, which will open locally in early October. It is a story about a Palestinian woman who emigrates to the USA with her teenage son to live with her sister's family in a small town in Illinois.
Beautifully written, with both pathos and comedy, it is the first feature film (and partially autobiographic) by the writer/director Cherien Dabis. She was also our speaker that evening, and delightful. I loved Nisreen Faour (the lead actress). Although it is about a Palestinian family, there is much that is universal to the experience of immigrants from any culture. It won the Critics' Prize at Cannes this year. See it if you can.

Saw a sneak preview of "Skin" (http://www.elysianfilms.com/skin.htm) tonight with the Cinema Society. I really liked this film. It is gripping but also very emotionally draining. The performances were worth it though. It stars Sam Neill, Alice Krige, and Sophie Okonedo (who you may remember from Hotel Rwanda and The Secret Life of Bees).
It is the story of Sandra Laing (http://women.timesonline.co.uk/tol/life_and_style/women/families/article6725566.ece%3Cbr%20/%3E) who was born in South Africa in 1955 to white parents but appears to be black. Growing up in this situation in the middle of apartheid was (as you can imagine) incredibly difficult, and tore her family apart. It is a true story about not only racism but family and how the former can destroy the latter. I strongly recommend it.

I just saw a British movie titled 'Five Minutes in Heaven.' It was an excellent psychological portrait of a man who is given a chance to confront his brother's killer (N. Ireland, the "troubles") and the anxieties and revenge fantasies that take hold. Equally well portrayed is the killer himself (played by Liam Neesom) who must live with the burden of killing for the rest of his life. The movie has no political agenda, just a snapshot of two lives changed forever in a moment of violence.
