Just saw a new indie movie with the Cinema Society that I can recommend:
Into Temptation
http://www.intotemptationthemovie.com/
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1232824/
Stars Jeremy Sisto who is so excellent in this film as a young Catholic priest who trys to intervene in the life of a young women who tells him, in confession, that she is considering suicide. Kristin Chenoweth plays the young woman.
Filmed entirely in Minneapolis, and written and directed by Patrick Coyle (who was our speaker last night).
It has already gone to video/DVD (Netflix), but has opened in 6 theaters nationally based on its excellent reception at a number of film festivals.
I recommend it to anyone who likes a good story with great acting.

High Plains Drifter-Eastwood from 1973. Good, but too rapey. WTF, Clint rapes every woman and they beg him to take them w/ him? Ew. Good, aside from the rapey aspest.

I just watched the Mike Tyson documentary and i'd highly recommend it. I've long been a boxing fan and named my dog Tyson, so i've bee looking forward to seeing this and it didn't disappoint at all.
Even non-fans of boxing i think would like this documentary. It's more about the complex life and person that Tyson is than it's a documentary about Tyson the fighter.
Oh man that's a good one. Twas an emotional documentary.
Just saw, O brother where art thou. it was meh.
am watching, via netflix streaming, swayze's movie as drag queen. pretty good. gave wesley top billing, but i hand it to swayze. snipes just looks like ugly guy in drag :) read casting director, or somebody, wouldn't consider swayze until handed a tape/pic/something without saying who it was. lol. swayze pulls it off much better, imo, than ws. tho both are good.

To Wong Foo! One of my faves. Swayze, w/ his dancer skills, could move like a woman. Snipes, not so much. I love Leguizamo in anything.
"Why are you crying, little Latin boy in drag?"
"We must strip away your Princess Points."
"Get your hand off my ____!"
"I'm very lucky to have a lady friend that just happens to have an Adam's apple..."

We watched "Aliens in the attic" last night. I am a captive audience of my two little brothers (8 & 13) They got a few belly laughs out of it, but it was strictly for kids. We saw "Transformers" and "GI Joe" over the weekend, and I hate to say it but I kind of liked them both. My sister picked out a movie filmed in Greece...I think it was "Love in Ruins", and it was a sweet show. Richard Dryfus was in it , and the girl from "My Big, Fat Greek Wedding " . Clooneys new movie looks good...something like "Men Who Stare at Goats".

Just saw a sneak preview of "Blind Side" (http://www.theblindsidemovie.com/) with Sandra Bullock. I really enjoyed this film, which has both laughs and tears. This is definitely the 'feel good' movie of the season. The best role she has played in many years, and so different from her recent light romantic comedies. Based on a true story...stay for the photos of the actual Michael Oher shown with the credits.

Well I saw this film this week with the Cinema Society. I must admit I was not looking forward to this screening as I anticipated it being incredibly grim and difficult to watch.
I was right...parts of it definitely were grim and hard to watch...this young woman is subject to serious physical and emotional abuse from her mother, and was raped and had two children by her own biological father. She is morbidly obese and illiterate with no self esteem at all. On the other hand, she is fortunate enough to have two strong women enter her life and make a difference: a teacher, and a social worker. The ending is actually hopeful.
I would recommend this film to adults. I would only take teens to this film if I was prepared to have a long talk with them afterwards about abuse and some of the more sordid aspects of life. It is definitely not for children.

He does a great job in the part. The next day I went to visit some newly injured guys at a youth rehab center and the very person I saw reminded me so much of the movie. One eye shut, the other somewhat bugged out. Kinda freaked me out at first.

Saw a sneak preview of "Brothers" tonight with the Cinema Society. Another compelling and gripping film by James Sheridan. Tobey Maguire was incredible...an Oscar level performance, and both Sam Shephard and Jake Gyllenhaal also gave fine performances. One of the little girls (Bailee Madison) gave a wonderful performance for such as small child. Probably the best film to date to come out of the current war.

Saw a sneak of Invictus last night, Clint Eastwood's latest directoral effort. Stars the wonderful Morgan Freeman (as Nelson Mandela) and a very buff Matt Damon. This is quite different from most of Eastwood's recent films.
If you are a rugby (AB, not wheelchair) fan, that would be a plus. Not knowing anything about the game, I am sure I missed out on many of the fine points, and unfortunately an effort to be authentic with Afrikaners accents results in much of the film being unintelligible to my ears, but I still enjoyed it.
The ending was a bit too simplistic and maudlin for me too (esp. coming from Clint Eastwood), but I would wager this will generate another Oscar nomination for Freeman.

Saw Nine this week with the Cinema Society. I believe it opens Christmas Day most places in the USA. Great cast (Daniel Day-Lewis, Sophia Lauren, Fergie, Kate Hudson, Nicole Kidman, Penelope Cruz, Judi Dench, etc.). It is based on the Broadway play of the same name from the 1980s (which I never heard of), and is also somewhat based on Fellini's 8 1/2. Reminds me also of All That Jazz. It's a musical, which is not my favorite genre, but I still thought it was worth seeing. Would not be in my top 10 for the year, but has already garnered multiple award nominations (Critics Circle, etc.).

It is based on a true story about a father (Brendan Fraser, actor), John Crowley, who has two children with Pompe disease (a rare form of muscular dystrophy) and his efforts to find a cure/treatment for his children and save their lives. Harrison Ford plays the scientist (much more of a curmudgeon than our Dr. Wise Young!!). Very gripping, great actors (the little girl is a kick), and an inspiring movie without being maudlin. Leonardo and Kate search for more... Not much in the way of special effects. A small slice of life story that takes more than it gives. You won't like the well-acted characters, but you will understand them.

"Fresh (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0109842/)"
Description on Netflix (http://www.netflix.com/Movie/Fresh/524745?trkid) is not really accurate. It is about a 12 year old boy named "Fresh", who is a runner for drug dealers, but this story is not predictable.
I didn't read reviews before watching this film, so I was very impressed with the tone and surprised by some of the story. The main character, Fresh, gives an extremely good performance.
Some critics' comments (can link from netflix) are more descriptive:
Here's a movie filled with drama and excitement, unfolding a plot of brilliant complexity, in which the central character is solemn and silent, saying only what he has to say, revealing himself only strategically. ... Guns have made our cities unsafe for children. What "Fresh" does is bring a new perspective to those facts, in the form of both drama and thriller. This is not an action film, not a clever, superficial thriller, but a story of depth and power, in which the dangerous streets are seen through the eyes of a 12-year-old who reacts with the objectivity he has learned from chess, and the anger taught to him by his life. (Ebert)
A stylish, affecting, ingeniously plotted first feature in which a 12-year-old black kid, beset by drug-dealers, a junkie sister, and his clean-living aunt, struggles to put his life in order by means of lessons he's learned from his chess-playing dad. Yakin never settles for the easy, last-minute moralising and macho posturing that has afflicted much of the otherwise intriguing new black cinema; here, story and character take priority, helped no end by Nelson's quiet, riveting central performance. Chick, I loved Fresh when it first came out, and recently got it again on Netflix. Highly recommended!
I saw A Single Man today (not A Serious Man, which I saw a couple of months ago). It was a very different role for Colin Firth, a cameo role for Julianna Moore (who is always interesting), and a heartbreaking and heart felt film. I would also recommend this.

I saw MOON, starring Sam Rockwell. The story surprised me, because I had no idea what was going to happen, going into it. This is a good thing! Rockwell does an amazing job.

Up in the air I thought was good, I could really relate to it cause I travel a lot, and yes I do have have a Hilton Honors card like George Clooney had in the movie and it is great.
I didnt really care too much for Its complicated, although it did have its funny moments, it was more like watching a made for TV sit com. I was kinda disappointed with Steve Martin in that movie. I guess the "Wild and Crazy Guy" has really mellowed out a lot to the point of being really sad and boring.
Now that I've seen Avatar 4 times, nothing else really holds a candle to that movie.

District 9 was great. Note some thematic similarities to real-life events (MNU = Blackwater perhaps?) Overall, a good story, great action, only a few nitpicky flaws I noticed not worth mentioning.
MINOR SPOILERS AHEAD: Anybody else notice that the Nigerian warlord was a wheeler? Did you catch is pimped-out chair? Also I got a major nerd high for the mecha suit at the end. Half-Life 2 players will notice the suit came with a gravity gun. Flying pig attack!
that movie about the stoner kids doing their history report, they went back in time and gathered the greatest people in the history of man. love that movie but dont know the name of it. Bill and teds great adventure I think but not sure. then monsters inc.
The Bucket List. Jack and Morgan were great. Never heard the saying of a "bucket list". Guess I need get one started. :)
Green Street Hooligans
I liked this movie, and would like to hear from folks in England as to the reality of it. Kind of reminds me of the fighting we did as a kid - no guns, knives, etc.

We watched Catwomen of the Moon!
We laughed our heads off. It's a 1953 low low budget film with the most godawful props, effects and acting you can imagine. It's a mass of contradictions and surprises - cheap lawn chairs as acceleration couches, gravity in space, fire in vacuum, a spider puppet, at one point an actor calls another by the wrong name!
The music is by Elmer Bernstein, who later became truly great (True Grit?), writing scores for hundreds of fine movies. At the time he was brown-listed during the red scare mania, and needed to keep the wolf from the door.
Anyway, we recommend this one. Keep your expectations of good art low, and try to count the errors!

I have seen this too :lolz: A station here used to run a "World's Worst Film Festival" every Friday night at midnight. A film professor from a local university hosted it and provided indepth analysis of each film. Watching it was definately one of the highlights of my week as you never knew what he was going to show. They were most often low budget sci fi flicks from the 50s and 60s, although he was also fond of screening the films of Ed Wood lol. Besides Catwomen on the Moon other memorable ones I saw via this series were The Terror of Tiny Town, The Creature from the Black Lagoon, The Most Dangerous Man Alive among many other :)

Yankee Doodle Dandy.
James Cagney had very liberal politics, and the cons at the time were starting to mutter things about unpatriotism. This wartime movie, about super patriot George M. Cohan, effectively squelched those mutterings. I am by no means a flag waver, but this film and the thoughts it brings of how the country worked together at that time brings a lump to my throat.
Cagney was never real happy about the tough gangster roles, and thought of himself as a song-and-dance man. And he was very good at that.
George M. Cohan wrote many patriotic songs, such as the WW1 song "Over There." He published a song about the American flag called "You're a Grand Old Rag;" some people got very incensed, thought he was insulting the flag. The sheet music had already been distributed. So he went from place to place, bought up every copy, then reprinted it as "You're a Grand Old Flag." Find a copy of that first version sheet music in the junk store, you've made yourself a lot of money.

It is a joint European production, with crews from Ireland, France, Brussels, and Hungary responsible for the production. Went to see a fascinating documentary last night called "The Last Train Home." It was a default choice as due to traffic delays we arrived at the theatre after the movie we planned to see had already started. But it all worked out in the end as this film turned out to be a surprising little gem.
Every spring, China’s cities are plunged into chaos, as all at once, a tidal wave of humanity attempts to return home by train. It is the Chinese New Year. The wave is made up of millions of migrant factory workers. The homes they seek are the rural villages and families they left behind to seek work in the booming coastal cities. It is an epic spectacle that tells us much about China, a country discarding traditional ways as it hurtles towards modernity and global economic dominance.

Sex and the City 2. Better than the 1st one, nowhere near as good as the series. At least it didn't have all the emphasis on labels, name brands etc. The ladies go to Abu Dubai. Samantha gets into trouble. Carrie sees Aidan. Charlotte and Miranda confess that motherhood is harder than they thought it would be. Chris Noth looks good enough to eat, so does Smith, I thought the ladies looked great, and Abu Dubai looked liked a fantasyland until they started telling them how to dress and act. It's the Middle East, much is forbidden for women.

1. William London pulling his hand from Father Flynn could have easily been a reaction from being teased about his finger nails, not necessarily indicative that Father Flynn was ever inappropriate with him.
2. Father Flynn claimed he requested to speak with Donald Miller because Mr. McGuinn caught him drinking altar wine. However, the wine was on Donald's breath AFTER meeting Father Flynn. We never get the impression that it was on his breath when Sister James got the call in the class for Donald to go to the rectory.
3. When Father Flynn and Sister Alyosuis have their last argument in her office, she goes to walk out, he calls her back in, and then proceeeds to take her very vague statements as if he's admitting guilt of something, but not of something as severe as she believes.
What do you think?

I had to watch it a couple times to understand if her accusations were correct and yes I believe she was. What got me sold on it was when she stated she called a sister at his previous church, then he decided to resign that church. He didnt admit to it but I took it he was backed into a corner and couldnt deny it. Also the conversation with the boys mother, to me that was making the picture seem clearer.
Now about the altar wine, didnt the sister say she could smell it on his breath in class? My impression once the story unfolded, he got the boy a bit relaxed to do as he pleases with him. I recall there was something to do with a shirt also, but that part I dont remember to well, phone seems to ring when that scene is on.
This movie is definatly one that you play the detective, also you really have to read into the middle of all thats being said and done.
I got Ondemand through my cable, I am going to see if it is still available to catch if anything more I missed or miscalculated. Def. a worthwhile movie indeed.

1. Yes, Sister Alyosius lied to him in an attempt to coerce the truth out of him. The fact that he resigned was as she told Sister James an admission of guilt.
2. Sister Alyosius did find out from Donald Miller's mother that he was in fact gay and his father beat him because of it. It's vague as to whether Mrs. Miller knew in fact that Father Flynn was having an affair with her son. You can interpret her wanting the priest to show kindness to her son as more innocent kindness and one of a father figure, not sexual.
3. When Sister James smells the alcohol on Donald's breath in the classroom, it is after he returns from the rectory.
4. Father Flynn putting Donald's undershirt in his locker is very creepy and his excuse to Sister James that it was to spare him embarassment doesn't ring true to me because no one at that time knew except he, Donald Miller, and Mr. McGuinn about the alcohol. Plus he went to Sister James because he knew she was more gullible than Sister Aloysius, a detail Sister Aloysius let Father Flynn know she figured out why he'd do so.

I've just watched The Road for the second time this week. The second time watching it left me feeling as empty as the first I watched it.
The Road takes place in a post Apocalyptic world where apparently there is so little sun that photosynthesis is not occurring, thus nothing was green, even the sea wasn't blue - the film was so colorlesss and dark that the lack of light and color was in and of itself depressing for the watcher. Sometimes I think movies are stimulating because we are watching an ever changing series of bright lights and colors which tends to be mood elevating totally separate from whatever story is being told. I think the Road was a story better told in a book than on screen.

I missed my intended movie last night, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo because it took to long to get organized to go out. A common problem it seems when it comes to me and movies. Disappointed because I had been waiting over a month to go see it. But maybe will try again tonight.
What we ended up seeing last night, just because it started shortly after we arrived at the theatre, was an wonderfully eccentric film called Exit Through the Gift Shop. I absolutely loved it. The movie poster said it was a documentary, but to me it felt a bit like The Story of the Weeping Camel in that I wasn't sure if the story was real, a re-creation of a true story, or entirely made up and just looked like a documentary. Despite that, it's a great watch.
Features British graffiti artist Banksy who is renowned for producing iconic street art and for fiercely guarding his identity to avoid prosecution. Eccentric French shop owner Thierry Guetta attempts to capture the world of graffiti art by following many of the best known vandals at work. In doing so, Thierry tries to locate and befriend Banksy only to have the artist turn the camera back on him.

WFE, only the first film has yet been released in the USA. I have read the first two books and am planning to read the third.
I loved the first movie. I am so often disappointed in movies based on favorite books, but I must say this one was spot on. The locations, scenery, etc. were just as I had imagined in the book (only the bridge was bigger than I had anticipated), and I also thought the actors were very true to the story in both appearance and character. A good bit of casting. Of course some of the book content was pared down for the movie, but I still thought it was true to the story line and flavor of the book.

Obie, I saw it! Should you watch it? That's hard to say, but the fact that you're even considering watching it tells me that maybe you should. :) Let me explain...
This film's premise is disturbing and crazy and even silly, but the filmmaker took it all very seriously, and you can tell when watching it. By this I mean the film is played straight, not in a black comedic horror kind of way, even though there are times when you may find your self letting out an uncomfortable chuckle or a laughing "ohmigod, I can't believe what I'm watching!"
While the film is graphic at times, this is not a "Saw" or "Hostel" type of torture-porn horror flick. Not that that's necessarily a bad thing; I just want to differentiate between the types of horror films, because "The Human Centipede" doesn't rely on a lot of gore for its horror. It relies more on the viewer's imagination and morbid anticipation. There is some violence and blood, but it's certainly not a gorefest like a slasher flick or torture flick.
To me, "The Human Centipede" is in the vein of classic horror films. It's freaky and scary on a psychological level, and the villain is frightening because he's so convicted in his motivation for the horror he's inflicting. He's insane but methodically calculating. The actors who play the victims aren't very good actors, but the guy who plays the evil scientist is, and the victims don't have much to say anyway. :p
So, to sum up, I liked it even though it's a sick and twisted premise. I'll be interested to hear the filmmakers' commentary when it comes out on disc (I saw it on pay-per-view on-demand).

speaking of subtitles - anybody see John Woo's Red Cliff? Beautiful imagery, especially Blu-Ray on the plasma screen.. over 4 hours (2 discs) but read every word and enjoyed it, epic battle scenes - a "real life" Lord of the Rings. How cool would it be if you can manipulate your dreams to do anything you wanted, or just know that you're in a dream. And the very end get your really thinking about the whole movie. Not that I'd go into a Cameron Diaz movie expecting some high-brow film, but it was ridonkulous. The premise seemed interesting, the whole 'a stranger would die, you get rich, what does it do to your psyche/relationship' which could be enough of a mind f*ck in itself for a movie, but in the middle of it they threw in everything but the kitchen sink- STOP READING IF YOU DON'T WANT SPOILERS: I mean, they threw in government conspiracy, aliens, near death/afterlife experience, creepy emo teenagers, kidnapping, the whole NASA/man hit in the face by lightning action, a glowing pool they stole from cocoon, (wtf was that about anyway?) teleportation.......... Just read this Fiesty and I had to laugh at your "diaz and her sometimes southern accent" Yea that was rather fake wasnt it. And I did get confused in the movie about the government and all. I assumed it was her husbands place of employment, NASA, that was doing this. It did get rather off handish and left one trying to figure shit out. Now I did like the idea of the story, The will you push the button, but then it took off and left you wondering what the hell is that all about mentality. Cameron Diaz isnt one of my favorite actresses either.

Saw "The Extra Man" this weekend, and sadly was very disappointed. I usually like Kevin Kline, as well as John C. Reilly, but didn't like any of the characters in this weird film at all, and found the ending especially unsatisfying. Skip this one, or wait until you can get it cheaper than seeing it at a movie theater.
