View Full Version : Music As Therapy: Dealing With Anger
Danine

I'm just 18 months into my injury, still grieving...sad, angry, etc. Sometimes I find that "angry music" helps me get through those days when I just need to "rage against the universe." Below is one song that I've found particularly helpful.
Have any of you found particular songs that help you get through those days when you're just angry at everything and everybody...or those days when you're just pissed off at SCI? Please post!

Dixie Chicks Rock.
There are a few songs that help me release steam a little better than others. But listening to just about anything helps calm me the frick down. Music allows my brain to wander to any place I'd rather be.

One song that helped me out early on in my injury was Christina Aguilera, Fighter.

danine, making your own music is great for what you request. would you maybe consider learning how to play an instrument? no one in the band I play bass for has had lessons. all began to learn as adults. we are all physically challenged too. I was 25 when I began to teach myself. drummer tina was over 40, I would suggest starting with ukulele or dulcimer.

Thanks for the suggestion. I've actually always been fairly "musical." I was introduced to the dulcimer by a middle school art teacher...it's a really cool instrument...I'd love to own one someday. I also had some banjo and piano lessons when I was younger.
Currently, I have a keyboard and a guitar that I fool around with sometimes; but the only instrument I learned to play really well is the trumpet. I was a "band geek." I played from the time I was about 12 until I finished my undergrad degree. Music has always been a huge part of my life! As you know, it's a wonderful coping technique!

I think Paula Cole does a good job of simultaneously capturing sadness and anger in a lot of her music.

I found playing in a band was great therapy in my pre-accident days. I quit my band 3 days before my accident. :o
They still play but its hard for me to watch now that they're just a 2-piece. And they need a good singer (don't tell him that though!)

Here's an old song I sang. I can't believe it's over 15 years old now! We recorded it in 1998. I chopped the bitrate in half to make the file uploadable. (1.2 mb, 64kbps).

2.Concrete Blonde--true
3.Ani DiFranco--Wish I may
4.Roberta Flack--I told Jesus
5.Savoy Brown--I'm tired

Anybody into Drum and Bass? I used to dance to it in my room with the lights off and let all my frustrations out. Went to clubs where they spin it on the decks, even spun some myself. It's hard hitting, heavily syncopated, accompanied by deep bass lines and soundscapes that let your imagination fly and dance out raw emotion. My fave right now is squarepusher.

This one always brings me back to Earth. Mellows me out ya might say, although it's not truly not a song to do such a thing. But it does make you think, and from there lies enlightenment, or more anger. Depends on the individual I suppose.

BtIOD0pYtd4
[Blaze Ya Dead Homie:]
Last of a dyin breed, salt of the Earth
Policed and been hated by the Church since birth
Bent and forgotten was the Prophet in the Prophecy
The Opaque Brotherhood they label it hypocrisy
Like a lost practice of the guilty crimes
Drinkin from the blood so they think it won't survive
But the Call the Brotherhood Opaque is too strong
Time to write another chapter, we've been gone far too long
[Shaggy 2 Dope:]
Look once you see a flash like a shadow
Make a double take your wife gets left a widow
Dark Lotus kinda like a boxer's fist
Five of us packed together, covered up and ready to hit
We turn bodies to souls, souls to blackness
The Devil's most cleverest trick is to make you think you don't exist
We Opaque, translucent and eternal Brotherhood
A secret society buried deep up in the woods
[Jamie Madrox:]
Opacity basically means that can't see
The Brotherhood of Five Elements we get deadly
Behead thee
Throw it at your Devil call it wicked
Knee deep in the cloudy water see a Lotus never pick it
Conflicted by thoughts of life and death and in between
If you're true psycho skitso then you're knowin what I mean
As we marchin in concession down the long and windy path
Skeleton hand for a compass, dead skin for a map
[Violent J:]
Even on a sunshiny day, I'm grimy
I can't find my way, untie me
I don't mind the hate, it reminds me
I'm of time and space
Five nomads (five)
Followers of no fads
Lotus stem rises up above the pedals of grass
Which was once over towering
Now we overpowering
Planting our seeds for whatever tomorrow brings
[Monoxide Child:]
I'm separated and laughed at from most kinds
I stood firm on my own two and passed by
My middle finger in the air because I'm that guy
Who don't give a fuck to watch each and every one of y'all, die
Now put that signal in the sky and let em that I'm a Lotus
And Brotherhood is the life and if we grow and keep the focus stronger
And we're gonna get it
No longer can we forget on that path where the wicked shift
[Chorus:]
Opaque, black light haunted by the flash
The Lotus grows where the roses pass
No light, no dark, no bad, no good
You can't see through the Opaque Brotherhood
Opaque, black light haunted by the flash
The Lotus grows where the roses pass
No light, no dark, no bad, no good
You can't see through the Opaque Brotherhood
Opaque, black light haunted by the flash
The Lotus grows where the roses pass
No light, no dark, no bad, no good
You can't see through the Opaque Brotherhood
Opaque, black light haunted by the flash
The Lotus grows where the roses pass
No light, no dark, no bad, no good
You can't see through the Opaque Brotherhood
Opaque, black light haunted by the flash
The Lotus grows where the roses pass
No light, no dark, no bad, no good
You can't see through the Opaque Brotherhood

I make my own music literally. I make Native American Style flutes. Best sound for soothing the soul. Also have played guitar and banjo for over 50,yikes, years now.
