So the company i work for have purchased me a new CP....A lap top YAAAAAAYYY! This is the one exactly (i dont really know whether its good or bad) http://www.bestbuy.ca/catalog/proddetail.asp?logon=&langid=EN&sku_id=0926INGFS10108341&catid=25253&CMP=NLC-email_weekly

So my question, what do i need to be completely wire free? Whats my next step after the computer is sitting on my desk?

You need a wireless router for your house. I use this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833124010 and have found it to work pretty good throughout my house.

I'm assuming you already have internet access?

For wireless printing you will need either a printer with built in wireless or a wireless adapter. I don't have either one, just connect the laptop to the printer when needed.

Shaun, congrats on the new laptop! As others have stated you need to get a wireless router, use a strong alphanumeric password, and select WPA encryption. If you get stuck, use Bob as your lifeline.

As stated above, turn on WPA encryption along with using a strong alphanumeric password to lock down your home network.

Linksys is a great router. Pay attention to headaches, sleep problems, etc. when you go wireless... It took me months of feeling like shit - investigating diet & meds until discovering it was all those GigaHertz in the air! Wired the router & all is better.

Congrats on the laptop.
I was wondering about the radio waves. I also just got a laptop and a router.
Goat, you aren't using the wireless, anymore?

Correctamente! Still use the router, just ran wires from equipment to it. I feel much better w/o the GHz waves bombarding my brain.

So you did set the router to turn it's radio off right? Otherwise, it is still broadcasting even if you have nothing receiving(besides your body).

ABSOLUTELY!! (Otherwise I'd still be feeling like shit.)
Thanks though for pointing this out in case I didn't know.

Shaun - in one of the setup panels of the router, you can turn off the wireless portion of the router, making it so it only works with things plugged into it. The manual will tell you where, but to get started, type:
192.168.1.1
into your browser url line.

This will take you to the login page of your router. The default userid for linksys is blank, just hit tab. Default pswd is admin, you may want to change this, up to you. As always, be careful changing things in here, you can make it inoperable.

Goat must be a hypersensitive person, he is the first I've heard of that can definitively say this was the cause of his woes. But more power to him for figuring it out. I guess if you start felling shitty, keep this in mind.

Goat - since you said you only just wired up to it, was just trying to make sure, but figured you had shut it off.

It's a shame not to have a wireless connection.
I want to take the laptop out on the porch when it's warm out.
That would not be cool if it messes up your head.
My router has long range "N" function.
Sorry to harp on this subject.
How's it going with your new computer, Shaun?

I got brutally, suddenly ill last night. I've been sick a few weeks, decided not to be a wuss, to put my head down, shut up and gut it out.

But yesterday my hubs set my sis-in-law's wireless router up in the house we were at.

Could the sudden sickness and the sudden wireless have been connected? Does anyone know of studies on this subject?

Betheny check out elecromagnetic hypersensitivty, or EHS. British studies, mostly.

I say we all don tinfoil hats just as a precaution:D

If it will preclude what happened to me last night, I'll start the new fashion to look like a shiny rolling Christmas ornament! Maybe it was just AD but seriously, wrap me up in tinfoil and re-name me Reynolds if it prevents a replay of that Christmas joy. Arck, Twas The Night of The Painful-nas.

Or you can get a wireless card through many cell phone providers so you can use there computer anywhere there is cell phone coverage, thats the set up I have great if you travel a lot.

Give me a break....you have so many other types of radio waves around you without a Router. Maybe you should build a bomb shelder and live in that if you think Router radio waves are gona make u sick.

I'm probably safely esconced in my underground cave right now...
Sure, there's alot of RF in the air - but being exposed to more (voluntarily!) is ludicrous. There are microwave concerns too. Those who don't have their heads buried in the sand should find these interesting:

I have a bit of a wireless question .... if you've already set up your connection and didn't do the secure password thing how do you go back and do that? I've been trying to fix that and I seem to be having a senior moment ..... can anyone help me ?
Thanks for letting me borrow your thread Shaun :D and welcome to the new universe!!
