Celebrities Along With Top LPGA Stars to Participate in the Karrie Webb Celebrity Pro-Am to Benefit the Christopher Reeve Paralysis Foundation
NEW YORK, July 2 /PRNewswire/ -- Karrie Webb, winner of 26 LPGA titles, including five major championships, will join nine celebrities and nine LPGA professionals for the 3rd annual Karrie Webb Celebrity Pro-Am to benefit the Christopher Reeve Paralysis Foundation. The tournament will be held at Century Country Club in Purchase, New York on Monday, July 22, 2002.

Competing with Karrie are fellow LPGA professionals Beth Daniel, Meg Mallon, Lorie Kane, Michelle McGann, Nancy Scranton, Kelly Robbins, Pat Bradley and Rachel Teske. They will be joined by sports, media and entertainment luminaries including Billy Crudup, James Naughton, Joe Piscopo, Jerry Orbach, Billy Baldwin, Kenneth Cole, All My Children's Marj Dusay, Kay Cockerill, and NASCAR racing champion Dale Jarrett.

"I'm very excited to once again host this unique and memorable event," said Webb. "As you know, all of the money that we raise helps to support the efforts of the CRPF in their quest to find a cure for spinal cord injuries."

Registration will begin at 8:30 a.m. with a continental breakfast, followed by an exhibition by the LPGA professionals at 10:00 a.m. Following lunch, the tournament will begin with a shotgun start at approximately 12:45 p.m. A gala dinner and silent auction will follow play.

Various sponsorship opportunities are still available for corporations or organizations of any size. Packages are currently available at the "Birdie" and "Eagle" levels and can be purchased through the CRPF office. All packages include a foursome in the Pro-Am during which the group will be paired for nine holes with an LPGA professional and for nine holes with a Celebrity Guest. A gift bag for each participant and tickets to the dinner are also included.

"The Christopher Reeve Paralysis Foundation is extremely grateful to have the support and commitment of the celebrities and LPGA pros participating in this year's event, especially the very talented Karrie Webb. Her continued devotion allows us to carry on the tradition of uniting sports and entertainment celebrities to benefit spinal cord research and people living with paralysis," said Christopher Reeve.

Century Country Club was founded in 1898 as the summer playground for a group of Wall Street bankers immortalized in Stephen Birmingham's book, Our Crowd. The golf course at Century is a par 71 that stretches to 6807 yards from the Championship Tees. Century's strengths are its par-fours, several of which stretch more than 400 yards, and its tightly-bunkered and slick back-to-front greens. Although the surrounding areas have changed greatly over the years, the Club has retained its reputation as one of the Metropolitan Area's finest.

All proceeds from the Karrie Webb Celebrity Pro-Am go to the Christopher Reeve Paralysis Foundation, a national, nonprofit organization committed to funding research that develops treatments and cures for paralysis caused by spinal cord injury and other central nervous system disorders. The Foundation also vigorously works to improve the quality of life for people living with disabilities through its grants program, paralysis resource center and advocacy efforts. Webb raises money for spinal injury research

Queensland golfer Karrie Webb has raised about $1 million for spinal cord injury research over the past two years.

Webb has collected the money by running her own tournament, the Karrie Webb Celebrity Pro Am.

She became motivated to get involved in what she considers a most worthy cause due to the condition of her quadriplegic coach, Kelvin Haller.

With the help of former actor Christopher Reeve, a quadriplegic after horse riding accident, Webb's Pro Am has enjoyed enormous success in its first two stagings.

This year's event will be held at the Century Club in New York on July 22. All money raised will go to the Christopher Reeve Paralysis Foundation.

"We have nine LPGA players and nine celebrities," she said. "We have a clinic in the morning, play an 18-hole scramble in the afternoon, followed by dinner, where we have an auction.

"It's a very special day and everyone seems to have a lot of fun."
