ACT reprimanded
15 May 2002
US health investigators have questioned the financial viability of Advanced Cell Technology (ACT), the controversial biotechnology company that claimed a human cloning achievement at the end of last year, in an audit that accuses the company of misspending nearly $150,000 in government grants, reports The New York Times today.

But the last sentence of the article is most revealing:

Finally, the report questioned the company's financial viability, citing an audit in 2000 that raised questions about whether the company could continue as a "going concern."

Isn't ACT a private company? Investigating misuse of federal grant money is one thing; auditing the books of a private company when no employee or misfiled taxes are involved is something else entirely. But then one of the big drug companies got hit with a $500 million fine the other day for bad lab practices.
