AUA Presents Senate Subcommittee With Recommendations to Improve Funding for Urologic Research

BALTIMORE, May 9 /PRNewswire/ -- Because the burden of urologic diseases can fall on anyone -- from young children to the elderly -- and promises to grow with the population, the American Urological Association (AUA) is an advocate for an increase in urologic research -- and the government funds that help drive it.

Today, AUA President E. Darracott Vaughan Jr., M.D. testified to members of the U.S. Senate Committee on Appropriations' Subcommittee on Labor, Health and Human Service, Education and Related Agencies, making key recommendations on fiscal year 2003 funding for urology research at the National Institutes of Health, in particular the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases and the National Cancer Institute.

Highlights of Vaughan's testimony included these recommendations for NIDDK:

-- A separate urology division at NIDDK, with a leader reporting to the

director of the institute.

-- Increase research into the urologic disorders that affect women.

-- Increase funding for research into the urologic complications of

diabetes.

-- Increase research into the effective treatment of bladder dysfunction

associated with spinal cord injury and neurological diseases.

-- Provide further research funds toward the benign aspects of prostate

disease.

-- Increased training opportunities, including training for residents.
