Paralysis Foundation

Hosting Fund-raiser

THE KENT WALDREP National Paralysis Foundation, an organization whose mission is to find a cure for spinal cord injuries, has formed a Northeast chapter in the name of Joey Testaverde. Testaverde, 19, is a native Long Islander paralyzed in a swimming pool accident in 2002.

Based in Huntington, the Joe Testaverde Chapter of the National Paralysis Foundation will work to raise awareness as well as funds earmarked for research programs in the Northeast.

The chapter has assembled an advisory board whose members include former baseball stars Yogi Berra and Bud Harrelson, TV newscaster Roseanna Scotto, Msgr. Tom Hartman and Dr. Wise Young.

The chapter is hosting its first fund-raiser, a cocktail reception, on May 18 from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Yogi Berra Museum and Learning Center, on the Montclair State University campus in New Jersey. Former major-league baseball umpire Steve Palermo, who also has a spinal cord injury, will be honored.

For more information about the fund-raiser, call the Northeast chapter at 631-367-1985. To learn about the national organization, visit www.spinalvictory.org (http://www.spinalvictory.org).

NARSAD Silver Ribbon Available

There's a hot ribbon in town: the silver ribbon, like the one movie director and recent Oscar winner Ron Howard wore on his lapel at the Academy Awards. The silver ribbon comes from NARSAD Artworks, an offshoot of the National Alliance for Research on Schizophrenia and Depression in Great Neck. The ribbon symbolizes support for those who suffer from a brain disorder.

Ribbons are available by calling 800-607-2599 or online at www.narsadartworks.org (http://www.narsadartworks.org).
A Taste of the Hamptons

Here's an opportunity to fill your belly and someone else's. The seventh annual Share our Strengths "Taste of the Nation" Hamptons spring brunch scheduled for Sunday will benefit Island Harvest and Long Island Cares, two nonprofit organizations working to fight hunger.

The event, which will be held at Saracen in Wainscott from 1 to 5 p.m., will feature food and drink from more than 20 of the Hamptons' top restaurants. Festivities also include live music by singer Ruth Ann Faye and a silent auction.

To purchase tickets, call 631-324-4181.

Local Kids Offer Helping Hand

Alex Dennett, Ruthie Greenfield, Rachel Pollack and Rebecca Shames, students from Great Neck South and Great Neck North Middle Schools, wanted to help less fortunate children. With the help of their mothers, they brainstormed a bowling party to benefit the North Shore Child & Family Guidance Center. The event, called "Kids Helping Kids," will take place Sunday from 3 to 6 p.m. at the AMF Syosset Lanes.

For more information, call Amy Gordon at 516-626-1971, ext. 320.
