Stem Cell Action Alert

URGENT

Your Senators Will be in Your State Next Week

Be Sure to Contact Them about Therapeutic Cloning!

Beginning on February 18, your Senators will be in your state for a week during the President's Day Recess. They will be working and holding meetings at their district offices. This is a terrific chance for you to urge your Senator not to ban therapeutic cloning.

Please Act NOW!
Seize this last chance to contact your Senator
directly before the Senate votes.
The debate on therapeutic cloning, which could be vital to the advancement of stem cell research, is about to come to a head. Senator Sam Brownback (R-KS) has introduced legislation that would ban all cloning, including therapeutic cloning; put researchers in prison; and deny patients the benefit of any treatments or cures developed from therapeutic cloning outside the United States. Hearings are underway, and the Senate will take up the legislation in March.

Use Your Home Field Advantage
Unfortunately, most Senate offices report that they have heard only from supporters of the Brownback bills, not from people who want to realize the promise of stem cell research. Please contact your Senators now to let them know that therapeutic cloning (which scientists call somatic cell nuclear transfer technology, SCNT) is vital to stem cell research and must NOT be criminalized.

Personal contact can be the most effective way to communicate. Call your Senator's district office now to see if you can arrange a face-to-face meeting with the Senator or a staff member next week. Then follow up with a fax.

Contact information:

To find district offices, go to our Web site, www.stemcellfunding.org, (http://www.stemcellfunding.org,) click on "Find Your Rep" and fill in your state's name. The Senators' contact information is at the bottom of the page.

Meeting message points:

When you get a meeting, try to make some or all of the following points.

· The nation's leading scientists, including two prestigious committees of the National Academy of Sciences, agree that cloning to reproduce humans should be illegal, but that therapeutic cloning (or somatic cell nuclear transfer technology, SCNT) should be permitted.

· By moving stem cell research forward, SCNT could bring new hope to the nearly 100 million Americans who suffer from cancer, Alzheimer's, diabetes, hepatitis, Parkinson's disease and other devastating conditions for which treatments must still be found.

· SCNT allows a patient's own genetic material to be used to develop advanced stem cell therapies. These therapies-including transplants and transfusions-- would be tailored to match each patient's specific medical condition without causing the patient's immune system to attack and reject the therapy.

Please Let Us Know How Your Conversations Go!!

I received this message in an E-mail and want to pass it on. So lets'go guys !!!

I know we have members here from Iowa--Charles Grassely. And even more from Arizona--John Kyl.

And anyone here who is a veteran, parent's are vets, family, etc., we offer our lives and bodies not our dignity in the service of our country. Make sure veteran's advocates understand that.

Here is a list of all the Judiciary committee members and where they stand on the cloning issue, according to the information available on their web site. Links are provided to comments when available.

It looks like a lot of the Brownback cosponsors have no publically stated opinion on the issues of stem cells or cloning.

Dear senator Brownback:

There are two issues I would like to address.
First, therapeutic cloning should be allowed to be researched and developed to help the millions of Americans that are suffering from each day. You have the power to save not only the lives of your family; but yourself as well. Therapeutic cloning
known as: somatic cell Neuclear transfer technology (SCNT), could bring new hope to millions of americans suffering from cancer,Alzheimer's,diabetes, hepatitis, and parkinsons disease, also spinal chord injury. which at this time we are spending billions of dollars caring instead of curing.

Second, the majority of Americans do not believe in human cloning, Nor should this type of research be confused with the therapeutic cloning known as Somatic Cell Nuclear Technology, (SCNT).

We hope you will stop the pain and suffering of millions of Americans. The American way is to help our fellow man as we have always done in the passed. we look to you to follow the American Tradition.

Sincerely,

Perry Simms
