The Anti-Cloning Act of 2001 (HR2505) proposes to stop human cloning by penalizing each attempt at human somatic nuclear transfer (moving the nucleus from a human cell into any egg) with a $1 million fine and 10 years imprisonment. This would stop all cloning of human embryos, as well as the production of cloned human stem cells that many people believe may be beneficial for diabetes, Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease, brain and spinal cord injury, and other conditions. Several countries have banned reproductive cloning (production of a cloned embryo) by implanting the cloned egg into a uterus but allow human therapeutic cloning (the creation of stem cells from cloned human blastocysts or pre-embryos).
