Anyone here know how good this trama ctr is? I have a friend whose father fell off a ladder this week, broke L1, T3, T4, and is 74 yrs old. She is here in Georgia, her dad in N.Y. and she is worried they aren't helping him, as he has some paralysis, but can give her no info on how they will treat him. Told her I would ask here in case someone had been there.

Sorry to hear about this. Hopefully the nurses/others will be more knowledgeable about this hospital. I hope someone is able to be with your friend's father to be his advocate during this difficult time.

It is very important that talented neurosurgeons are treating him and that they are not delaying/deferring treatment just because of his age.

One thing to start thinking about as soon as possible is where he will go for rehabilitation, which is not too far away, and it is essential that he goes to the best possible place - a place with expertise in spinal cord rehab. DO NOT choose a rehab center out of convenience. Also, some of these amazing places are also acute care hospitals and you may be able to transfer your friend's father NOW to one of these places to get the best possible care of him right now.

Think about calling one of these places, asking to talk to someone about a possible transfer of a patient and to help address your concerns.

SHEPHERD CENTER (Atlanta Georgia - ?closer to his daughter) 1-800-743-7437

It is the best trauma center in western NY. Don't know much about the after trauma or rehab end of things and haven't heard much except for the VA hospital there.

There is a large VA Hospital there with good SCI treatment (just down the road from ECMC I believe).

That is good to hear. He is a vet and will transfer to the VA soon, but he fell on Monday and they have yet to do any of his surgery yet!

I will tell my friend what you said....I'm sure that will encouage her.

Thanks,

Andy

To be designated as a "trauma center' you have to meet certain criteria so they should be good.
