I broke my neck in a fight 3 years ago. I know I'm one of the lucky ones as it wasn't a complete injury and I can function almost independently. I was a pretty good carpenter and liked my work. Although I can fend for myself I cant do that work any more and I now employ other skilled guys.
I try not to take any drugs but one thing I am getting so fed up with these days which doesn't seem to get any better is my skin hurting all the time. It feels like it's burnt. The worst areas are my knees and my feet. Wearing long trousers and shoes which in Belgium is necessary most of the time never stops hurting which wears me down and makes my day shorter from tiredness. I've had enough of it now.
Is there a drug I can take for this?
Thanks in advance for any help with this.

I took Neurontin for that kind of stuff... got sick of it though & quit w/in 2yrs (I'm close to 10 post-injury); it may be worth looking into, or others may have some better / more current ideas...

I get that when I first lay down @ night after sitting all day... I tried the Neurontin. I had every side effect and one of them is suicidal thoughts and extreme irritability. I thought I was gonna kill someone so I went off it. It works for a lot of people and not everyone gets the side effects. There are other meds too for spinal pain. Talk to your doctor.

If you want an alternative to a prescription drug that will not address the root cause of the problem, suggest you try a combination of COq10, Vitamin E Complex, Lecithin, and Fish Oil. The combination of these work as anti-inflamatories and will heal the nerves from inside. Nerve pain is caused by inflamed nerves due to injury or disease. Reducing the inflamation will reduce the pain.
Magnetic therapy will also work wonders. The earth now has a very low magnetic field it used to be much stronger. The magnetic field helps electrons at the atom level cross paths with electrons in the cell next door. Increase the strength of the magnetic field and you speed the electron movements which speeds healing of nerves and body tissue. Go to www.amri-intl.com and click on more information. Listen to the 50 minute lecture. You can also purchase a magnetic mattress pad which will help wth pain and healing when you sleep a night. Go to www.magneticosleep.com. Suggest you get a 20 gauss mattress pad booster. The earth's magnetic strength is .5 gauss. My son is a C-6 incomplete 2+ years post injury and has no pain and uses no pain medication.

Thank you for your reply.
I do prefer alternative medicine. I use Homeopathy which I think has healed me faster than if I didn't take it. And I have acupunture every 2 weeks.
It's just I can't find a releaf from this burning sensation. Inflamation sounds like the cause as if I drink alcohol the symptoms increase. Smoking a cigarette's even worse so I dont do that anymore!!
I have thought about Magnetic treatment and will look at the website in a minute.
I'm really sorry to hear about your son. It sounds like he got off fairly lightly like myself. I hope so and that he's doing ok. Even at this level spinal cord damage it's such a devastating thing to happen in someones life time.
Thanks again

Scott--Thanks for your concern of my son.
BTW, several friends from his school took him (a C-6 quad) to Six flags where he rode everyting in the park including the upside down rollercosters!! This is the second time he has been there this month. How many quads on this website can say that 2 years post injury?? How many quads can say that at all?? Most of his healing has come from MME magnetic therapy!!

6 Shooter - how did you come to the conclusion that SCI related nerve pain is caused by inflamed nerves? I have repeatedly read how Dr. Young explains this pain and did not understand it as caused by inflamed nerves. It seems to be a complicated mechanism. Can you help and explain how you came to your point of view, please? I would be very interested.

Good to know... I'll look into it! I can have whatever pain meds I want from my dr and they are granted. I just don' want my mind to be numb and I don't like the hangover feeling from meds. It's been 14 yrs and I haven't had a day w/out some pain bc of the extent of my initial injury- My T6-8 didn't exist anymore and I broke T6-12 and my rib cage. W/ the rods and early onset of arthritis, sometimes it's tough not to take pain meds when they're there...

Have you ever seen a broken body part or a bump on the head. Instant inflamation. Even surgery will cause major inflamation to any body part in the area. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pain
Did not say that all SCI nerve pain is related to inflamed nerves. Some SCI pain and pain associated with amputations are neuropathic as Dr. Young points out.
I am not a doctor by any stretch and don't profess to be one. However, reading the many posts on this website shows that many people have learned a great deal of the medical terms due to necessity. When one has an SCI, you have to learn as much as possible or else.....

Congratulations man!! Hope we get to do some of the things you have tried as well. It's great for the spirit and gives one something in the future to look toward and dream about.
