Hi again,

We are hoping someone can help us determine the Medicaid and social security benefits my stepson, Todd, SCI C5 would receive in Illinois versus Texas. Todd was injured on Jan. 8, 2002 and is in Baylor Rehab in Texas until the beginning of July. His mother and brother live in Texas, and the plan is to have Todd live with his mother there. His mother asked me to find out the benefits Todd would be entitled to receive if he was in Illinois instead (this is where I live with Todd's father). Todd is 32 and had no insurance when he was injured, as he was between jobs. So we are dependent upon Medicaid and Social Security to support his needs. IF ANYONE HAS FIRST HAND KNOWLEDGE OF ILLINOIS' BENEFITS, PLEASE LET US KNOW. If you have a specific phone number or web site I can contact to get this information, please let us know as well. Any information will help. Thank you again for all your help. Jan and Jim

PS. Which states are the best states to live in to receive the BEST Medicaid and Social Security benefits???

Try here for a listing of fed and state resources: http://www.spinalcord.org/

Federal resources are going to be the same, no matter where he lives; Medicaid, although a federal program, is administered state-to-state.

Todd will receive Medicaid until he is two years post, at which time he will receive Medicare (Federal) as his 'primary'. Then, if he is still eligible for Medicaid, that will be his secondary, and pick up costs that medicare doesn't cover.

I would take steps to make sure Todd doesn't have any assests in his name; insurance policies (either in his name or as a beneficiary on someone elses' policy), even graves!
