I just came across this article and agreed with it's conclusion.
http://www.silvermac.com/2008/why-there-are-no-viruses-for-osx/
Basically, it asked why Macs are virus-free while everybody who owns a windows computer and connects to internet must spend hours every week (sometimes every day) cleaning up and protecting themselves against viruses. Yes, I know. They say that the reason is too few Macs and too many PC's. The article points out the flaws of Windows, including Internet Explorer which is more vulnerable to attack because it is so closely integrated into the operating system, the various legacy portals that Windows maintain for backward compatability, and the lack of security once a person gets into the front or backdoor.
The article points out how the Mac OSX is a more modern system and built from groundup to be virus-free, that it requires password-based permission whenever there is any program installation or system change. But, I think that the lack of viruses on the Mac comes from another reason that nobody has suggested. People who use Macs are less likely to write viral software. Why? Well, we are all icon based and not code-based computer users. Most mac users don't even know where their system files are, much less how to exploit them. The typical hacker starts with a Windows machine and probably regard a Mac with horror.
