hallo my friends!! my name is Andreas Lambrou and iam from a small island in the Mediterranean sea called Cyprus. I feel lucky because in our island we dont have too many quatraplegic so i turn to this website for some opinions.
My serious problem is my pain. After 6 months from my accident it started to appear some feelings. After this feelings they transferred into pains (like burning and pressing). Iam C5/6 and at the places that i dont have feeling (below the chest) i have pains. Mostly at the back and at the stomach including the bladder, also at the legs sometimes more and sometimes less.
I would like your opinion and how to deal with this symptoms. In Cyprus they told me that these are neuropathic pains.
I hope you will answer for me.
Thank you for reading my problem and answering it.:mega:

It sounds like neuropathic pain to me, especially the burning sensation. There is a drug here (in US) called neurontin that helps some, so hopefully it is available in Cyprus.

I would also recommend asking your doctors about Neurontin (also called Gabapentin). It works wonders. If you try it, I would also recommend starting on a small dosage and increasing it slowly to minimize side effects. Hope this helps.

Hello, Andreas
Some physicians specialize in pain management. If there are any such specialists in Cyprus, I recommend that you see one. With their knowledge of the many possibilities, they may be able to do much more for your pain than can other physicians.
For other paralysis-related things, are you aware of Paralyzed Veterans of America? They have a number of very valuable (free, online) publications (http://www.pva.org/site/PageServer?pagename=pubs_main) that you will be interested in.

Andreas,

Your situation sounds much like mine. I started to get feelings below my injury level that soon turned into severe neuropathy. I was put on Neurontin and took the maximum dosage for about 6 months before swithing to Lyrica and it seems to work much better for me.

All the advice given to you so far is great, find out as much as you can and if something doesn't work try new things. Best of luck and welcome to CareCure.

I started out using neurotin and switched to Lyrica. The Lyrica works much better for me.
Good Luck, Welcome

Hi Andreas,
Sorry to hear of your pain, and that you have to "go it alone" where you are. I hope you're able to get a specialist who can help you find a treatment that works for you.

Andreas, I surely am sorry to hear of your pain. It is great you have found this site. Neuropathic pain from injury to the central nervous system is different from neuropathic pain from injury to the peripheral nervous system. This site has excellent input. You can also visit painonline.org painonline.com and centralpain.org. Italy has some well known physicians who treat nerve injury pain, particularly in Turin.

There are other drugs for CNS pain. Klonopin, Ativan, Soma, that can be tried.

I am going to do a trial of Soma here in a day or so, because the former drugs above are not keeping the pain episodes at bay. I spent 3 hours down and out at work this morning. I wonder if I have central pain...........

Andreas,
one of my friends also had the same problem and it started all due to an accident and he got the pain for more than 3 years and kept going to doctors but the doctors could not give him any remedies for the pain to stop, then only one doctor gave him Neurontin. but the problem was that it was not available in the local drugstore and finally after searching on the net i got a page www.drugdelivery.ca, which takes your order and post it, to your address. My friend got his in less than 2 weeks! if in cyprus its not available you could try it and they will post it to your home!

I tried nurotin and am actually still on it. the side affects for me (hair loss, neasea, dizzy/spacy feeling, weight gain etc) have been pretty severe and i have not had any relief in pain, so i am going to try to switch to Topmax and if that does not work maybe Cymbalta. I tried Lyrica and it lowered my WBC count so i could not take it either. good luck to u my friend. from what i have learned so far, its a trial and error game. all meds seem to affect people different so u just hve to try them till u find something that works for u.
