James “Dood” Paxton, a 26-year-old outdoorsman from Rison, was injured in an automobile accident, causing him to be paralyzed. Paxton is planning a trip to the Dominican Republic for stem cell treatment. Pine Bluff
They decided to take the venture after a 26-year-old man partially paralyzed from an automobile accident learned of the procedure, illegal in the United States, by searching the Internet for medical options.
James “Dood” Paxton, a 26-year-old outdoorsman from Rison, was injured in an automobile accident a year and a half ago causing him to become paralyzed below the waist.
“One day you’re 26 years old and strong as an ox, then the next the doctors are telling you that you may not live and that you’re going to be confined to a wheelchair,” said Paxton.
Before the accident Paxton had worked as a supervisor for Anderson Electric in Pine Bluff and as a part-time sheriff’s deputy for Cleveland County. He was also a regular hunter and fisherman.
“I just had a will to get up again and started searching the Internet,” said Paxton. What he found was Medra Human Fetal Stem Cell Therapy. The program’s director is William C. Rader, M.D., an American physician who travels to Medra’s Dominican Republic facility on the last weekend of each month to administer the stem cell treatments.
“I expect a lot from it but I’ll take what I can get. When you’re in this situation anything is an improvement,” said Paxton.
He and friends have been raising money to pay for the $30,000 treatment and in one day raised $7,000 by holding a combination fish fry, chicken dinner and yard sale. Paxton has been selling many of his possessions to help him afford a chance to recover
