I know this has been brought up plenty of times before but I cant find the thread sorry..
Is there a list anywhere or referal service other than the local hospital that only refers their doctors?
I need a regular Dr. that is at least a LITTLE familiar with patients with SCI.. I am getting tired of having to teach a dr about SCI .
I have been trying to call the miami project hospital referal line and cant get through. But I want to find a local dr that at least knows what a spinal cord injury is and what to keep an eye out for .. I would rather pay The nurses and doctors here on this forum than go to find another dr locally.......
I know its a problem everywhere unless you can be near a research hospital that have Doctors that take private patients as well..
So is there a AMA list or somewhere to look to find a doctor hat is somewhat familiar with SCI..
Thanks
Gary

While not all PM&R physicians (physiatrists) do primary care, they should be able to refer you to internal medicine doctors who have a clue. I would start with finding a good PM&R physician who can help you with your rehab-related care needs (ie, therapy orders, DME medical justifications, SCI specific complication management, etc.) and also ask them to refer you to a good internal medicine physician who they can work with collaboratively. You can find a list of PM&R physicians in your area here:

It is a plus if they are also board certified in Spinal Cord Medicine. You can ask their office staff about this.
