View Full Version : Computer Stopped Working
When I booted up my Dell computer, I got a message on my monitor,"No Signal" and then a blank screen. I checked the monitor with another computer and it worked fine and I have both an integrated video slot and a video card and got no response in either case. I am reluctant to bring the computer to a shop as it will probably cost more to trouble shoot the problem than purchase a new computer. Does anyone have any ideas as to what I can do to track down the problem?

Did the computer turn on? You sorta skipped that info.
Did it beep any?
Probably if nothing happened, you blew your power supply... or as PN asked, didnt have everything turned on... Also check the psu is switched on, ittle switch on the back.
The computer did turn on. You could hear the harddrive going. The power switch on the back was turned on and the on off light on the computer was on. I did not understand the question about UPS. Is that relevant?

Do you get a bios screen? Something that says American Megatrend, Phoenix, or Award in the corner? If not, unplug the power cable from the back and leave it off for 30 mins. Doing so will reset the CMOS on your motherboard.
Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS). It is relevant if your computer is plugged into it.
As paton said, do you hear a beep when you first turn it on ?
Thanks for all of the suggestions. As it turned out I had a defective video card. I purchased a new video card about two years ago which replaced the integrated circuit in the motherboard. I assumed that since when I tried plugging the monitor connector into the integrated device and it did not work, either the monitor or the computer was at fault. I did not realize that when you plug install a card to replace a integrated device, the computer by passes the integrated device and routes the video to the video card. Once the video card was disconnected the computer worked fine with the integrated device.
