Dear colleagues and friends,

The Albert and Mary Lasker Foundation is writing to let you know of a new article, "Saving lives through research", that we have just published on our website. This month, we're spotlighting the research efforts of Dr. Alfred Sommer, winner of the 1997 Lasker Clinical Research Award, who through his work on vitamin A deficiency has saved the sight and lives of thousands of children worldwide.

Although Vitamin A was long recognized as essential for healthy eyes (deficiency of vitamin A causes blindness from xerophthalmia, a disease of the eye), Dr. Sommer was the first to show that the extent of vitamin A deficiency also highly correlated with increased disease and death. Thanks in large part to the work and advocacy of Dr. Sommer and his colleagues, the UN launched a worldwide campaign to reduce Vitamin A deficiency, to save the lives of an estimated two million children and the sight of many others each year.

To read more about the work of Dr. Sommer and the history of vitamin A deficiency, an interview with Dr. Sommer, and a unique opportunity to email him questions regarding his scientific research, please click on the links below:
