Don't know what you mean about lan line but to get a dial tone you need to plug a phone line (2 or 4 pin) into the line in jack of the printer. The network cable may physically fit but it will not function as a phone line or get you a dial tone.

If you have the printer set up as a network printer you need to plug a RJ45 (CAT 5 Cable) into the NIC on the printer. Then you still need to plug a phone cable from the wall to the line in jack of the printer.

If your going to hook it up to a computer and then share it you will need to plug the printer into a computer with an USB cable and the share it.

Three totally distinct unique connections which serve different purposes.

1. Phone line to give your fax a dial tone to access the phone system.

2. A CAT 5 Cable which will give you connectivity to your network.

3. A USB cable which will allow you to connect the printer directly to your PC.

by not work what happened, did you hear it get dial tone?
some fax are finicky and the polarity on the phone line has to be correct. you can tell this is the problem is the fax will start yo dial out and you will hear the dialtone from the speaker but the call will not complete

the phone cord supplied with that fax only has the red/green wired, whereas most modular phone cords have all 4 red/green yellow/black . if for some reason your jack is wired as a 2nd line to the yellow black it wont work.
trying to think of simple solution, have to see if radio shack sells modular jack entenders
do you know the fax works, or did it work someplace else?

I don't like these all-in-one solutions, I always get problems with those.

Im not using the cord that was supplied w/ the printer. it work when i first bought it years ago. I tried 3 different phone lines. I eve tried using a 2 way jack, still won't work. What to exactly get from radio shack? red/green-entenders? the female teeth inside the fax are not broke are bent..

If you tired it in multiple outlets.. I think your fax went kaputz!

Can you try another house, so new complete phone line, to rule out bad lines n your house?

i've had a brother multicenter (fax, copier, etc.) for yrs. never a prob. since i relied on it for work, i really needed it. dunno what your issue is, but if you get dial tone on phone on same jack, the fax should too. are you trying to fax from computer? cause fax machine just uses phone line like a phone. you should hear dial tone on fax.

female teeth are bent in fax? you may have your prob right there.

yes i am with pantob, try a different house . it is sounding your the fax is shot, it the rest of the all in one hp working?
i remember a

also use the same cord you are using with the fax at the other house.
if it works at another house it has to be the way your jack is wired.
i remember the older faxes and modems having problems when the telco line polarity was reversed, whereas phones would work..
are you tryinh to send a fax via the computer or direct from the machine? try the power down and power up the all in one machine too.

the manual is specific about using their cord, i have the same fax and i remember when i first hooked it up it didnt work since i just used the old fax cord that i had unplugged.
i though it was defective and and than saw that they say to use their fax cord, i cant figure out why a regular cord wont work, they look the same .
i tried mine with a regular cord and got dial tone when i did the fax set up test, however i am low on ink so it wont print.
what happens when you run the fax set up test?

Press Setup.
4 Press 6, and then press 5.

This displays the Tools menu and then selects Run Fax Test.

The HP all-in-one prints a report with any errors it encountered. Review the report for information on how to fix any problems found.
