Up until recently I have had little trouble walking. Recently I have started having trouble getting up from a crouch position and have had to ask for assistance. I am puzzled as to what might be causing this. I recently spent a month in the hospital for a heart valve replacement and my exercise regimen was interrupted. Also I gained some weight which seemed to have increased edema I have in both feet and legs significantly. Could an increase in edema cause weakness in the legs? I am having a MRI just to rule out any other cord related issues.

Hi,

Edema can cause some weakness but another issue is that severe swelling can throw off your balance and coordination.

Mike I hope you've taken this issue to your heart surgeon? Not sure what all is involved in a valve job, but please don't let it go with just asking here.

Thanks for the suggestion. After my valve surgery I was administered some drugs that gave me a real problem with walking. I worked with my cardiologist to continue reducing the dosage of these drugs and I presently don't appear to have any side effects. I will be seeing him again in two weeks for a follow up and will discuss this weakness issue with him again. Hopefully I will be able to totally get off the medicine.
